Angelica Schuyler Is The Best Thing In Our Lives

I am the biggest Hamilton fan that I know, but even I didn’t know about “Congratulations,” one of the cut songs. My friend made me listen to it on YouTube a couple days ago and she was shocked that I had never heard it before. I have heard the entire “Sit Down John” song, but I had never heard of this amazing blessing by Renee Elise Goldsberry. I think, like Hamilton in general, it has changed my life. So before you continue reading this post, listen to it here, and then come back.

Amazing, right? Don’t you have the chills?

I don’t have tickets to Hamilton at the Pantages yet (shock of the century, I know), but I don’t understand how Hamilton is still going on without this song. Just kidding, it’s amazing. But seriously, I feel like I learn so much more from this song! This is a follow up to “Satisfied” and yet it blows my mind a thousand times more than “Satisfied.”

I am responsible for last 300 views of this song on that YouTube channel. I’m not even kidding. At 5:30 am, as I’m getting ready for my before-class work shift, I am lip-singing-belting “ELIZA IS THE BEST THING IN OUR LIVES.” When I’m walking up the hill from my four-hour class I’m bopping to “So scared of what your enemies will do to you.” At 9 pm, while I am typing out this blog post and the rest of this world is getting ready to go to a Halloween party, I keep going to my YouTube tab and pressing the replay button and shaking my head when she sings “Do you know why?”

Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton is the character that I identify with the most. I wish I was Eliza; full of grace, getting what she wants, being able to whisper-sing. But I like Angelica. She’s smart, she’s tough, and she her songs are so hardcore. She’s looking for a mind at work, when really, her mind is the best one!

Had I enough money, time, and resources (and I know everybody says that), I would have sewn myself an Angelica ball gown. I think I’m going to tack that to my bucket list, right next to “See Hamilton.” If I start something in the summer I could probably have something by next Halloween. Or Comic Con. Is Hamilton a thing at Comic Con?

Speaking of one year, it’s almost been one year since I discovered Hamilton! Yes, I made it famous (within my family). I was literally looking for anything to do instead of study for my finals, and it took me two days to listen closely to the entire soundtrack, but I did it and my life absolutely did change. There are so many songs about having courage (cough – Angelica Schuyler) that definitely got me through the hardships of my first year of college. Without having listened to Hamilton, I would have never been propelled into this part of my life where everything I do is out of my love and passion for things (including theater). It’s made me redefine who I am, what I like, what I do, and what my life goals are. I was not in this spot one year ago, or two years ago, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without theater and without Hamilton.

Hold up, Auli’i Cravalho just liked one of my pictures on Instagram from a Moana Artist Tour event I went to.

Okay. Anyway. Where were we? Badass leading ladies rule my life? Yes? I think so? WOW I am just so excited to see all these new non-offensive productions with people of color, be they from Disney or on Broadway or my ultimate favorite thing in the entire world, Disney Theatrical Group. I definitely feel like I’m starting this new part of my life in an exciting place where anything is possible, and to summarize it…. look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now!

I’m writing this after a week of midterms, so I can afford to spend a few more hours than normal surfing the web, working on my new club Bruins on Broadway (basically a club devoted to supporting UCLA alumni on Broadway! check us out on Twitter @bruinsonbway and our Tumblr and… oh yeah… GETTING READY TO SEE DARREN CRISS IN HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at the Pantages this week! It’s my first official show ever! I’m so excited!

So! Keep the spirit of Angelica Schuyler forever in your heart, go watch Moana on November 23rd, drink lots of water and support local businesses. AND VOTE! DO NOT FORGET TO VOTE! Angelica Schuyler did not compel Thomas Jefferson to include women in the sequel for you to NOT VOTE! I am off to get some sleep before working a 6-9 am shift tomorrow (which, I love where I work, so it’s not a big deal), AND THEN TOMORROW I’M GOING TO THE DISNEY STORE! And my dad is coming to LA, so I guess that’s important too. (Of course that’s important!)

Stay tuned to see if I actually create an Angelica dress!
